Listing red flags

Vague descriptions, no service history mentioned, a price that's suspiciously below market, refusal to let you inspect at their home, pressure to pay a deposit fast, or a seller who won't answer basic questions.

Inspection red flags

Mismatched paint or panel gaps (past crash), fresh underseal hiding rust or leaks, a pre-warmed engine, warning lights, smoke on start-up, and a damp or musty interior (possible flood damage).

Walk-away deal-breakers

Overheating, gearbox slipping, structural rust, evidence of flood or major accident repair, or a VIN that doesn't match the paperwork. No price makes these worth it.

Quick checklist

  • Seller answers questions and lets you inspect at their address
  • Paint and panel gaps consistent (no hidden repairs)
  • Engine cold on arrival; clean start with no lights or smoke
  • No musty/damp smell (flood risk)
  • VIN matches paperwork; PPSR checked separately

Frequently asked questions

What are the biggest red flags when buying a used car?

A too-good price, no service history, a pre-warmed engine, mismatched paint, warning lights, a musty interior, and any sign of overheating, gearbox slip or structural rust. The last few are walk-away issues.

How do I avoid buying a lemon?

Inspect the car cold in daylight, do a proper test drive, run a PPSR check and get a pre-purchase inspection. Trust the red flags — there's always another car.
